I am a self taught artist, born in North Carolina, and living outside Atlanta, Georgia.
In 1967, I moved to Gainesville, Florida, where I was introduced to the genius of William Blake.Though I had played with drawing as a child, Blake showed me the depth and power of art. Also in Gainesville, I met an amazing artist named Ishmael, who seemed to create art as a matter of living and breathing. With him, I began to explore my own way of doing something like the same. Now, some 40 years later, I am continuing to try to find what I want to say, and how I can say it in my art.
Most of my work starts from either a meditation on the perfection of being, or the knowledge of the existence of evil .... or something somewhere in between.
I am not looking to create an exact likeness of anything. My pieces are meant to represent a space, or feeling, or a dimension. If it looks fishlike, it's probably a fish. If something looks like a hand, it probably is. The question I want the viewer to ask is, where is the fish swimming to, what is the hand doing? I want you to ask questions. Sometimes there is a message, a story, a lesson. Sometimes, I have to say, it's just about laying paint on a medium (abstraction anyone?). If you wonder what a particular image, or set of images, means to me, or where they come from, let me know and I'll try to tell you. I'm really into communication.
